IAS, whose full form is Indian Administrative Service, is the administrative branch of the All India Services of the Government of India. Who is an Indian Administrative Service officer?

  • An IAS officer has the powers of all the departments of the district.

How to become an IAS officer?

To become an Indian Administrative Service officer one has to clear the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). It is considered to be the most difficult exam in India, although it is not impossible to crack it. There are three stages of the Civil Services Examination and to become an IAS officer it is necessary to clear all these three stages.

 

Preliminary Exam – Where there are two papers with multiple choice type questions. There is also a negative marking of 0.33 as a penalty. It carries a total of 400 marks and the time duration is 2 hours.

Paper I – Current Affairs, Indian History, and Polity.

Paper II – Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)

 

Main Exam – It consists of theory-based nine (9) papers, which are of a total of 1750 marks. Its syllabus is:

Interview – This is the last round after the objective and subjective exam, where the personality test of the candidate is taken. After the candidate is selected from here, he is trained and posted accordingly.

Usually, the examination process starts in the month of February. Around 5 lakh candidates appear in this exam in the first round. Only between 700-1000 candidates make it to the final round, where the interview takes place. Out of all these, only about 100 candidates get the post of IAS.

 

Eligibility to become an IAS

Age Range

  • To give the UPSC exam, it is necessary to be at least 21 years of age.
  • The maximum age limit for the General category to give UPSC exam is 32 years. While it is 35 years for the OBC category and 37 years for SC/ST category.

  • A medical student can also apply for this exam. But only when he has completed his degree and is doing an internship program.

  • Candidates coming under the general category can attempt 6 times.
  • Candidates belonging to the OBC category can attempt 9 times.
  • There is no limit for SC/ST candidates, they can take the exam as many times as they want till the age of 37 years.

 

Physical Eligibility for IAS

  • There is no minimum height, weight, or chest requirement to become an IAS.
  • The eyesight of the candidate should be proper. You are eligible if you are wearing glasses or have had any corrections like LASIK, ICL, or IOL.
  • The candidate should not have diabetes.
  • The teeth of the candidate should be in good order.
  • The heart and lungs of the candidate should be healthy.
  • The candidate should not have any disease related to the stomach.
  • The texture of the hands, feet, and limbs should be correct and there should be no problem with the movement of the joints.
  • The candidate should not have any congenital defect or deformity.
  • Should not be suffering from any complicated or chronic disease.
  • If the candidate has Grade 1 piles then he/she is declared fit.
  • In case of diseases like hernia, varicose veins,s or piles, the candidate is temporarily unfit and can be declared fit after successful surgery.
  • If the candidate has got any organ transplant done, then he is declared unfit.
  • The candidate should not have any disease related to the ear and should have good hearing ability.
